Are you headed to Mexico soon?  If so, we recommend that you purchase a separate Mexico auto insurance policy. We offer a broad range of Mexico auto insurance through our partner Baja Bound.  You need to carry Mexican auto insurance to drive legally in the country, as liability coverage is mandatory.

Mexico does not recognize American auto insurance policies. If you get into an accident or injure someone, anywhere in Mexico, you will not be able to use your auto insurance to cover the damages. Mexican authorities may arrest you and impound your car until the matter can be settled. Without a proper way to pay for damages, the process may take a while.

The risk and consequences are too great to not purchase a policy before you go to Mexico. The good news is it is easy and comparatively inexpensive to get your own Mexican car insurance policy through our agency.

Policy features can include:

  • Liability-only or full coverage policies
  • Physical damage and total theft coverage on full coverage policies
  • Deductibles that meet finance company requirements
  • Partial theft/vandalism coverage
  • Several limits of third party liability
  • Several limits of medical payments for passengers in your vehicle
  • Legal aid and bail bond
  • Roadside assistance available on most policies
  • Travel and medical assistance

A full coverage Mexico insurance policy covers your vehicle for physical damage, total loss, and theft, as well as providing the liability component described above.  In addition, some policies also offer coverage for partial theft of parts and coverage for vandalism.  It is recommended to use Kelley Blue Book to determine the most accurate market value of your vehicle when buying a full coverage policy.

Questions that are generally asked as part of the underwriting process:

  • What type of car do you drive?
  • What is the value of your car?
  • What limits do you want?
  • How long will you will be in Mexico?
  • Where you are driving in Mexico?
  • Is any driver under the age of 21?
  • Will you be towing anything?

 Mexico Motorcycle Insurance

If you’re riding a motorcycle into Mexico, you can purchase insurance through our agency too. Most policies offer liability insurance, but we recommend that you look for a Mexico motorcycle insurance policy that also offers coverage for theft and physical damage to your bike.

Regardless of what your domestic auto insurance provider may tell you, policies from the U.S. and all other non-Mexican insurance companies are not considered “proof of financial responsibility” and will not be recognized by Mexican authorities.  While a few major U.S. insurance companies may cover damages to your own vehicle in Mexico up to a small distance south of the border, they cannot provide coverage for damages to third parties. This is why any vehicle traveling into Mexico should carry at minimum a liability policy from a Mexican insurance company.
