Hoping for the Best, Preparing for the Worst

If you lived in San Francisco you would have experienced two minor earthquakes during the day yesterday that could have damaged your home. In the South and Midwestern regions of the country, over eighty tornadoes hit last week, causing millions of dollars in home damage and leaving thirty-nine people dead. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected. Here in San Diego, it’s currently in the sixties and there’s no inclement weather on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean disaster can’t strike here.

The average San Diego homeowners insurance policy runs between $700 and $800 per year. You can bring that price down by bundling your home insurance with your San Diego auto insurance policy. Most of our customers who do that save up to $500 between the two. If cost is a factor in your choice to either have or not have homeowners insurance that should address some of your concern.

Do you own a dog, have children, want to install a pool in the back yard, or plan on having some work done around the house? In any of these instances, you hope for the best, but you should also prepare for the worst. Are you covered if your dog bites someone or your child breaks an important piece of equipment? Do you plan on having guests over to swim in the pool? What if someone gets hurt? The same question can apply to workers on your property. Sure, they have insurance, but what if an accident is your fault and not theirs? How will you pay for the damages and medical bills?

Disaster can Strike at Any Time

In the past fifty years San Diego has seen its share of misfortune. In 1970, the Laguna Fire burned up 175,425 acres and destroyed 382 homes in twenty-four hours. In 1985, the Normal Heights Fire destroyed 67 homes and in 1996 the Carlsbad Harmony Grove fire destroyed 54 homes. And who can ever forget October 2003, when we lost 400,000 acres and 1800 homes to fire – $700 million in property damage. Those are some pretty convincing statistics for a need for San Diego homeowners insurance.

Don’t take this the wrong way if you’re new in town. We live in one of the most beautiful regions in the United States and these disasters are few and far between. There’s good reason to always hope for the best, because that’s what we experience most of the time, but it’s important to also prepare for the worst. A San Diego home insurance policy provides homeowners peace of mind that when disaster strikes they will be covered. It doesn’t compensate for emotional loss, but it sure helps financially.
